Words have power; they can create positive realities, or they can destroy you. They are capable of giving love, or hate.
“Aware of suffering caused by unmindful speech and the inability to listen to the suffering of others, I vow to cultivate loving speech and deep listening in order to bring joy and happiness to others and relieve others of their suffering. Knowing that words can create happiness or bring suffering, I vow to learn to speak truthfully, with words that can inspire self confidence, joy and hope. I am determined not to spread news that I do not know to be certain, and not to criticize or condemn things I am not sure of . I will refrain from uttering words that can cause division or discord, or that can cause the family or the community to break. I will make every effort to reconcile and resolve all conflicts, even small.” -Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen Master
I personally love this precept. Words really can create happiness or suffering.
I have seen their worst power as they destroy the life of a teenage girl. Everybody at school is talking about how she slept with everyone…how she is a slut…and in reality she is a virgin; After that…She will have to go through trauma therapy.
I have seen lives taken, when a child killed himself or herself because of suffering bullying.
I have heard words of hatred thrown at strangers at the streets; but the worst is when you use them towards your loved ones, and towards yourself.
Have you ever yelled: “I hate you!” To a person you love?
Choose your words wisely.
Express your love through words
When was the last time you said ” I love you…” To your family? Spouse? Boyfriend or girlfriend? Kids…?
I say it everyday…and I mean it.
There are people that have trouble expressing their feelings towards a loved one, towards a family member. Are you afraid of their reaction? Tell them, don´t take it for granted, and think that they know…Everyone needs to hear the words of love.
Show your love through your behavior
When you say that you love somebody…mean it; you need to act accordingly to your words, and show your love through your behavior.
As soon as you read this post…and you interact with anybody in your family, tell and show them you love them!
